Self Preservation Society
Tristan Newsome

Appearing at the SPOKE Word Festival 2012 FREE - SCALA Showcase Live at Shimmering West on Wednesday, March 14, from 8 pm until 10:30 pm

Billed as ‘The World’s Greatest Spaghetti Western Apocalyptic Folk Blues Singer Songwriter’, Self Preservation Society is the solo outing for Adelaide Singer/songwriter Tristan Newsome.

A seasoned performer, Tristan’s shows are captivating and more often than not bring a pin drop silence to the crowd. Tall tales and heart on sleeve song writing is his specialty, visiting traditional forms of writing mixed with modern and incorporating a fair amount of time travel for good measure. Whilst mainly performing with just an acoustic guitar and vocals, Tristan is a multi-instrumentalist and uses Ukulele and Banjo for different songs.

Self Preservation Society has a predominantly country, folk, blues and roots sound with a strong story telling element in the vain of Townes Van Zandt, Nick Cave, Johnny Cash, Paul Kelly, Tom Waits and Bob Dylan who are also all strong influences to Tristan.

Prior to taking on Self Preservation Society as a full time solo project Tristan was the guitarist/singer/front man for Adelaide rock and roll band The Flying Squad who gained some notoriety for their live shows and energetic music drawing on influences from 50’s rock and roll, country and more, then modernising that sound. In a relatively short time TFS attained some great achievements such as winning a battle of the bands competition, getting airplay on radio stations, as well as supporting notable bands such as Special Patrol and Galleon.

In 2011 Tristan entered two songs into the Song writers Composers and Lyricists Associations annual ‘Festival of original music’ competition and was proud to receive a highly commended award for his song ‘Perfume’ and also a winning entry with his song ‘Childhood’.

Tristan also collaborates with a variety of Adelaide music identities on various live and recorded projects so you have possibly already heard or seen him around town in one of these chameleon-like guises.

Self Preservation Society has played solo shows at various venues around Adelaide so far playing the delightful Grace Emily as well as The Wheatsheaf, The Metro, The Rhino Room, The Gov, The Jade Monkey, The Rob Roy, The Deli, The Crown & Anchor, Higher Ground and more.

'The influences of Tom Waits, C.W Stoneking and Robert Johnson are lurking in the shadows, but Newsome seems very much an innovator in his own right. It’s spaghetti western, apocalyptic and folk rolled into a captivating and threatening package'----Quiet Pop 'Zine' review

Self Preservation Society released a series of three homemade themed EPs in 2010, as well as a live album ‘Live at the Wheaty’.

The first two ‘#42’ and ‘Tamworth City Streets’ were released June 24th. ‘#42’ starts with a spoken word piece which ties in the four apocalyptic but roots styled songs that follow. ‘Tamworth City Streets’ is a stripped back and straight down the line folk blues and country album. ‘Tamworth City Streets’ again starts with a spoken word piece introducing the four songs following which are loosely based around Tristan’s visit to Tamworth a few years back and the people he met.

In November the third EP ‘Gone with the Wind’ was released. This is a stylistic mixture between the first two ep’s showing Tristan’s talent for ballads as well as the slightly strange on a collection of ‘Love gone wrong’ songs.

December hailed the final release for 2010 ‘Live at the Wheaty’ which was recorded as part of the Coopers Alive series held in South Australia. This particular show was called ‘Silence can be like Thunder’ – a nod to the Bob Dylan song ‘Lovesick’. Alongside the Self Preservation Society on this night were a couple of fantastic Adelaide bands ‘Brillig’ and ‘The Timbers’. In an effort to keep ‘Live at the Wheaty’ as a true live document the only editing that has been done is splitting the set into separate songs for easy listening, everything on the cd is as it was recorded straight into the mixers desk.

All Self Preservation Society production – recording (with the exception of the live cd), burning, printing and packaging is done independently in Tristan’s home studio ‘den’ at home in Athelstone, South Australia.

‘Tristan Newsome seems to be on a journey to discover his musical soul; “Self Preservation Society” is the next restless step on his path to enlightenment. This collection is different to what he has done before; it is probably going to be different to what he does next. Tristan is blessed with a smooth voice, the ability to write interesting observational lyrics, and a firm grasp of how to structure a song. Armed with these skills it will be interesting to see where it takes him.’ --------Music SA review ‘Gone with The Wind’

2012 has many exciting things in store including more new releases and a whole lot more live shows!

‘While there is no doubting his extensive experience on the live circuit in Adelaide has prepared him well, it is the honest emotional quality of his voice that makes this album so likeable. Couple that with his intricate storytelling and Newsome stands out as one of Adelaide’s best singersong writers going around, with Live At The Wheaty the perfect starting point for anyone yet to marvel at the Self Preservation Society.’ ----- Music SA review ‘Live at the Wheaty’
