“...this concert encapsulates the chamber music experience: intimate, involving music among friends.” SMH 2011
“...the expansive first movement contains fistfuls of notes for the pianist and characteristically, Kathy Selby sailed through with her formidable technique barely ruffled.” Rodney Smith, The Advertiser
“Newman was exceptional...playing with bristling intensity and sharp attacks, the cellist bringing a sense of catharsis to his extended solo near the end of the first movement.” Chicago Classical Review 7 November 2011.
The Selby and Friends 2012 season of concerts has a music festival style with a new look and feel presenting a stunning collection of some of Australia’s finest musicians. The season opens in Adelaide with A Ghost at the Cafe, 2.30pm Sunday 18 March Elder Hall, Adelaide.
A Ghost at the Cafe features two special guest artists who will join artistic director and pianist Kathryn Selby for a program of iconic piano trios: violinist Sophie Rowell, former leader of the Australian String Quartet and Clancy Newman, multi-award-winning cellist of both Avery Fisher and Naumburg prizes in New York who has returned to Australia, for a fleeting visit.
The program includes two giants of the piano trio repertoire in Beethoven’s ‘Ghost’ and Shostakovich’s epic second trio, plus the charming and good-humoured Miniatures by the English master Frank Bridge and the explosively entertaining world of American folk music, ragtime, jazz with the cult hit Café Music by Schoenfield, one of Selby’s and Newman’s favourites.
