Pop Musicology - "The Second Drummer Drowned"

Scouting for Girls

Scouting For Girls

Over the years, Britain has produced some of the world's best and most loved bands including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and more recently, Oasis, while others such as Blur, Kula Shaker, Arctic Monkey, McFly etc. has been well received in their homeland.

One band that is set to carry on this proud tradition is Scouting For Girls (SFG), a London-based three-piece band formed in 2005 by long-time friends Roy Stride (vocals/keyboards), Greg Churchouse ((bass guitar) and Peter Ellard (percussion).

Scouting For Girls SFG

Citing the likes of Thomas Hardy, the Beach Boys, Baden Powell, REM, Mark Twain, James, the Stone Roses, Glen Campbell, E.M Forster, the Eagles, the Temptations, Seamus Heaney, the Hormones, Belle and Sebastian, D. H Lawrence and many more as their influences, their music is jaunty, heel-clipping indie stuff yet lighthearted with a tendency to reflect on childhood innocence and experiences. The band was signed to a record deal in February 2007 after a two year struggle in which vocalist and pianist Roy Stride was working the day shift at a phone store in Harrow, London.

SFG She's So Lovely

For months after the contract signing, SFG released their first E.P. single, "It's Not About You" - the first limited edition E.P. to chart in UK history. The following September the band released their first single, "She’s So Lovely" which peaked at 7, and spent an amazing six weeks in the UK Top 10. The foundations were set, the radio stations tuned in, and Britain was (literally) waking up to SFG as the new British indie-pop sensations.

Fast-forward another four months to 20th January 2008 and the band celebrated a number one album, critical acclaim and the billing as one of the most exuberant and successful British acts in years.

Scouting For Girls

The eponymous self-titled debut album was released on 17th September 2007, and delivered a record that is resiliently upbeat in sound yet delves deep into the soul - posing questions and answering them in one swooping, rushing, head-spinning melody.

Having conquered Britain, SFG is all set to take on the all-important step of world domination with plans to make the world a much cheerier place to be.
