Pop Musicology - "The Second Drummer Drowned"

Jean Leloup - I lost my baby

May 7th 2008 01:33
Jean Leloup is one of Quebec's most loved musicians, a wild and unusual character. Singing in French and English, he plays to packed, hysterical crowds at the Montreal venues.

One of the songs I heard most often was "I lost my baby", a Quebec classic that is played by everyone with a guitar on hot summer nights.

Jean Leloup retired himself a few years back, but returned to the stage under a different name, also publishing a book. A busy character, eh? His 2002 album, La Vallée des Réputations, was a collection of songs that crystallized my feelings about Quebec, especially when getting away from the city.

"I lost my baby" is one of those songs that finds a current and takes it away. There are endless cover version of it:

"I lost my baby
I lost my darling
I lost my friends
I lost my mind

And all the family...
And all the family..."

Angus & Julia Stone

Angus and Julia Stone

Angus and Julia stone are brothers and sisters raised in a musical family in the northern beaches of Sydney, Australia. The siblings are inextricably intertwined by their love of music and their musical talents have brought them together to form a musical act whose words and music reveal a genuine love of music, and a talent for telling beautiful and beguiling stories.

The duo released their first EP, Chocolates and Cigarettes, in 2006 and began capturing attention on national airwaves before performing publicly in Australian festivals. Soon after, Angus and Julia relocated to London where they were taken under the wing of Fran Healy of Travis fame.

Work on their debut album "A Book Like This" began soon afterwards and the result is a strikingly poignant and textured album in a storybook format - hence the title - with each song revealing itself like a different page. While Julia's songs expose her as young woman in love dealing with relationships and interactions, it seems that Angus' songs surfaces from a different perspective, one which showcases a unique view on society and what goes on around us.

Angus and Julia Stone will be embarking on a national tour in support of their new album in June 2008 after a 30 date overseas tour scheduled for April/May incorporating the UK, Ireland and Europe.

Michael Jackson waving wearing glasses

With all this talk of Michael Jackson having to sell the Ranch and being so scarred from plastic surgery that he's had to stay out of the public eye, it's a good time to remember why Jackson was a household name.

Carrie Brownstein
In all the 'Me too!' hype around Rock Band and how it's changing the way we enjoy music, someone forgot to ask the rockers.

Well, Slate did, and Carrie Brownstein, guitarist of Sleater-Kinney, wrote a fascinating piece about her interaction with the Rock Band kit

Imitation Electric Piano Live

Imitation Electric Piano, Simon Johns from Stereolab's other band, played a most triumphant free show at East London's swanky and full-of-pre-curried-city-boys Vibe Bar on Brick Lane last Tuesday, and it was wicked. You should get their second record, it's called something funny like 'Burn it down, kick it till it bleeds' or something like that. Get it though, it's ace.

Here's what they looked like live:

Anthems For Odyssey – Come Blister The Sea EP

Though their aesthetic may be somewhat overwrought, the aptly-monikered Anthems For Odyssey create the kind of thrilling, pulsing soundscapes that My Bloody Valentine would have done had they hung out with their more up-tempo contemporaries. The multi-faceted clatter of 'Song For Sveta' is the equal of anything on Silversun Pickups' record from last year that was so heralded, but with a more considered, less bombastic bent to it. This is clearly a thoughtful approach to a sound that can so often become slapdash.
