Pop Musicology - "The Second Drummer Drowned"

Pavement to reform?

June 30th 2006 19:33
Ex-Pavement singer Stephen Malkmus and bassist Mark Ibold were seen not only playing together with Sonic Youth, but supposedly overheard talking about reforming Pavement at the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee. The Sonic Youth messageboards have been going insane, unsurprisingly. Fans apparently leapt on this like Frank Black on a crumb, leading to the deletion of the fire-spreading rumour.

So what does this mean? An invigoration for Malkmus, whose post-Pavement antics with the Jicks have been as much derided as praised? Or a chance for a large number of 35-year-olds to cry like overfed babies, like when the Pixies reformed in 2004? Do we even want a reform, or will it tarnish their near-perfect back catalogue?

Don't forget, they have to live up to Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Tough one...

It makes sense - let's face it, Malkmus and Spiral Stairs haven't made much of an impression solo . And people need money to live. I can imagine it would be very easy to have your arm twisted and sod the integrity issues involved.

Anyway, it's not as though Pavement were beautiful youths, who would be embarrasing themselves by clambering back on stage with a bt of a beergut! I see no reason why they shouldn't rumble on for years and years - which is not to say that I for one would be paying a lot of money to go and see them.

Incidentally, since I started getting into The Fall, I have a little less respect for Pavement... It was very, very naughty of them to completely rip off two Fall numbers for their first LP.

I seem to remember The Fall being notoriously mixed up over Pavement. Mark E. Smith seemed to really dislike them, but some of the others praised them a great deal (maybe that's why there's been so many line-up changes?!?)

But I also think it's difficult to say that The Fall were all that much of an influence after the first record. There's not a great deal of Fall-sounding stuff on Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain.
