Adelaide Fringe Parade

February 14th 2013 01:11
2013 Adelaide Fringe
will open in a Dizzying Spectacular
Friday 15 February

The streets of Adelaide will light up and the entire city will explode with a celebration of everything Fringe. At the centre of the party will be the iconic Fringe Parade that will travel up King William Street from North Terrace to Victoria Square.

Thousands of people are expected to line both sides of King William Street to welcome the spectacle of brilliant floats and thousands of Fringe artists as they strut their stuff through the centre of the city.

The Parade, which commences from 8.30pm, signals the start of four weeks of Adelaide Fringe mayhem and will mesmerise revellers with a wonderful array of stunning floats and costumes, all around the theme of Lit from Within.

Audiences will be treated to pre-parade entertainment from 7.00pm including international street performers and the dynamic Roller Derby League of Adelaide performing their skating routines up and down the Parade route.

Fringe Director, Greg Clarke explains, "The Fringe Parade returns to its origins in 2013 celebrating and showcasing the thousands of artists who are at the very heart of Adelaide Fringe all led by Fringe Ambassador Paul McDermott on his very own specially designed float."

Fringe Designer, Ali Jones and Fringe Parade Director, Roz Hervey, have combined forces to create a choreographed visual spectacular of illuminated floats and lanterns. Floats have been sculptured from paper and cardboard, and feature origami, multifaceted lanterns, giant illuminated light box towers and a 3.5 metre high illuminated kangaroo.

Mr Clarke added "The Parade also continues its long tradition of collaboration with diverse community groups. The Parade team have collaborated with local arts companies such as Cirkidz, Kurruru, Restless Dance Theatre and Tutti Arts to create floats with the following 4 communities: People with disabilities, Young people, Emerging communities and Indigenous groups."

In keeping with the theme of light the Parade is bracketed with fire; starting with a Welcome to Country featuring a Kaurna fire ceremony and concluding with a fireworks finale.

After the Parade, spectators are encouraged to continue their celebrations at one of the many Fringe venues throwing open their doors that night for the biggest party in town. Mr Clarke explained "If you head to the Central Market area you'll discover the Depot and La Boheme; down Hindley St. you'll find Freak Central; along North Terrace the Tuxedo Cat; in the centre of the city the Richmond Hotel and The Science Exchange; and in the East End The Garden of Unearthly Delights and Gluttony."

Mr Clarke added "Opening night is also a chance to be the first to discover the hottest Fringe shows in town as hundreds of shows will also open that night with many offering special one off $5 tickets"

The biggest celebration of art and cultural diversity in the country is set to enthral and entertain audiences as more than 930 events gear up for what promises to be the best Fringe ever.
