Pop Musicology - "The Second Drummer Drowned"

Sorry So Much

March 18th 2007 11:24
For not being any good of late. Now PM is back, fully informed about such subjects as the imperialism and modernity in the music of Edward Elgar, the constant Nazism references in the films of Ken Russell, the authenticity of recorded birdsong incorporated into Western Art Music, and how much you can trust Everett True. Sometimes I love my degree.

Sorry we were gone so long!

Go to the band's MySpace to listen to 'Robot Command Centre'. Mmm!

PM loves a little bit of clarinet. Used correctly, it can be the sound of sex and meekness, and Dark Captain Light Captain have definitely plumped for the former. Woodwind is something that can make or break a folk song (that was PM insulting Steeleye Span, insult fans), but there is enough veiled menace and potential energy in the ebony-black clarinet line to transfix. You'll listen very closely for its return at the tail-end of the song, and you'll miss it while it's gone.

This is, oddly, an extremely intimate sort of song, slightly insidious and seedy in its use of computer plonks of mantra-esque regularity. There's a definite tangible element of last-thing-at-night-slightly- inebriated wooze to this one, an engaging new character for this (so far) massively consitent duo. As ever, it's the atmospheres created that impress over any simple melodic aspects: DCLC are one of the hallowed few who heed the maxim that it's what you leave out of your music that's more important. 'Robot Command Centre' is utterly enveloping, just like everything else they've written.

But WHERE IS YOUR ALBUM, SIRS? PLEASE RECORD IT SOON.

A Sad Day...

February 21st 2007 16:03
Today sees the official announcement from Fortuna POP! records that both Finlay and Sodastream have decided to stop making music together. F-POP! sez:

"Comrades,

We’ll start with the sad news that two of our bands, Finlay and Sodastream, have
decided to call it a day. Finlay made two cracking albums for Fortuna POP!,
although, as anyone who witnessed Adam’s duck walk along the bar of the Buffalo
Bar on Friday will testify, it was the sheer charisma of their live act that
really made them special. We were also lucky enough to release two of
Sodastream’s four studio albums (frankly we just assumed they were slumming it
for a while before inking a deal with a major) and we will always have fond
memories of their recent uk tour when they played some simply astounding shows.
We’re sorry to see both bands go but pleased to have worked with them for a
while and to count Adam, Anamik, Giles, Chris, Lorna, Pete and Karl as friends."

Boo! Hiss! Don't split up! Make more records! Ah, that's not going to help...

Expect some gushing PM tributes to both bands very very soon. BYE GUYS. PM LOVES YOU FOREVER!

For those who might not have had the best Valentine's yesterday, Misty's Big Adventure have a lovely treat for you, yessuh! Here's what they say...

"As it's Valentine's Day, we thought we'd put up 'The Story of Love' on our player for you to download for free.

PM is sorry and loves you still!

February 11th 2007 17:35
There has barely been a peep out of me this week, I know. This will change. I've some pictures of Friday's Butcher Boy show in Brixton to stick up, and I've been mega busy trying to finish off this fegging Dananananaykroyd feature for Drowned in Sound. It's pretty much done now...

So don't lose heart. PM is seeing Fanfarlo, Low (I FUCKING KNOW!) and Finlay this week. And ...Trail of Dead the week after. So don't start complaining, there'll be some quality material arriving soon! Honest!

Look at this Butterflies of Love Video!

February 7th 2007 13:31
Oh boy, what a find! I love trawling YouTube at random, looking for stuff you don't think will be there...

Go here immediately! I think it's from the show they did with PM favourites Beat Radio. Could be wrong. But probably not...

Brian May Goes Mental

February 6th 2007 16:46
You may have already seen this at Drowned in Sound, but if not you're in for a treat. Maybe a chuckle. Maybe get some tea and a bourbon first. A writer for the completely perfect DiS, Gareth Dobson, has come under personal fire from Mr. Brian May with regards to his review of Mika's debut album. Review is here, Brian May's malarkey is here, and this is what Mr. May had to say:

"Good God ! Another nasty piece of work in Drowned In Sound. What is it about journalism which attracts the filthiest scum of the Earth ? What decent person could write something so despicably and nonsensically insulting as calling someone a 'diseased Leo Sayer"? I don't even want to get into the rest of this manifestly stupid article. This young guy Mika is just starting out, and has, by his own talent and hard work, already caused a splash. Why do these pitiful writers feel the need to try to vilify him, and bring him down? By all means criticise the music, if you really think you know better than he does. But these personal insults tell us nothing about anyone, except the diseased, jealous brain of the writer. I wonder what YOU look like, Gareth Dobson, you fabulous intellectual giant, you. You'd better be good looking, writing garbage like this. Even if you were, you would still be worthy of nothing but our contempt. Take my advice. Get a proper job. Make something of your own that gives pleasure to people; have the courage to put YOUR creativity on the line - and see what treatment YOU get from the 'critics' of the world. Meanwhile ... shame on you.

Future Of The Left Video Snip

February 2nd 2007 13:50
Here's a tiny weeny bit of Future Of The Left playing their 'Fingers Become Thumbs' single out on a record label. Oh yeah, it's on Too Pure. PM shot this sneaky video on Tuesday at the band's 100 Club show. There were posters stuck up all over the venue indicating to the audience that videos and pictures were more than encouraged, and could even be included in the band's forthcoming video! Woo!

Go here for it, and here's a lovely picture. PM also took a video of the hilarious encore drum solo deconstruction, but that's on my homeboy Rob's computer... bah. We'll sort it soon.

Remember in the Summer when PM was giddy about the Green Man Festival? Thought you'd read enough about psychedelia and folk and marshes and castles and Erotic Volvo from Misty's Big Adventure, didn't you? Well, in the words of Celine Dion, it's all coming back to me now.

Headliners have been announced as Joanna Newsom and ex-Led Zep croak-meister Robert Plant. That's good. Plant will presumably quoting Welsh-language poetry and shouting "Stryder!" like a banshee on crack whilst having pants thrown at his satchel-esque face, but that'll be a laugh nonetheless. And Joanna Newsom, well, PM is seeing her this April at ATP, so we'll have a good idea of what to expect come August. Her 'Ys' record is cool though. Ha, all those bears...

Hey, you know where the best writing on the web is, don't you? Course! It's at Tangents! But what's better than a normal flick through the virtual leaves of Alistair Fitchett and cohorts (PM among them, I'm cool...) than a wonderful reminder of how PAPER looks? The legendary fanzine for Postcard Records has been made available for perusal via this link here, thanks to one lovely Tangents reader. Boy oh boy, for those who are old enough, this is surely a trip down memory lane towards nostalgia street, stopping for a melancholy pie at the old remembrance café. For the record, PM is not old enough to go on that little journey.

Go to Tangents.

According to Semifinalists MySpace, their second record is starting to go places...

"recording is going v well. trying out so much stuff... venturing into places both aesthetically n emotionally that we're uncomfortable in.. it's scary n melancholic n ultimately rewarding... I think. dunno how all this will eventually shape up. still a while to go.

Go here to hear everyone's favourite death-folk-tronic-soundscapers Dark Captain Light Captain play a no-doubt spanking session. But do it between 5 and 6.30 tonight though, yeah? Cos you'll miss it otherwise. Unless they have that 'listen again' thing. They probably do. But make sure you listen anyways. That gives you approximately... (looks at clock, puts maths hat on) seven and a half hours to find a radio or an internet. Those who fancy listening old-fashioned style should turn their wooden dials to 104.4 FM if you live in London. I do, and I will! So that's HERE for the internet. Cool. Bye then. Bye.

Here's what they look like:

Afrirampo Confirmed For ATP

January 12th 2007 12:03
This is good news. Squealing Japanese noise-pop Berio-lovin' two-piece Afrirampo ahve confirmed for the All Tomorrow's Parties festival this April. PM is going! Yeah! Their live shows are fairly legendary, as are their costumes, so those people who are attendin ATP are strongly urged to pay attention to these lasses. Should be a doozy.

The full ATP line-up can be seen here. Look how it's grown!

A Dana Live Video! Amazing, yeah?

January 11th 2007 11:01
After telling Dananananaykroyd about their victory in PM's end of year song list, guitarist David suggested we have a wee gander at this particularly fine live video of the band playing the winning song (look at me asserting journalistic authority by making it seem like they filled out an application form and truly wanted to be considered!) at their last gig with former vocalist Giles (an artist, yes sir).

Go here for that.
