Pop Musicology - "The Second Drummer Drowned"

Ike and Tina

December 31st 2007 08:33
Ike Turner Walk of Fame
Ike Turner died this month, creating a maelstorm of weird emotions and half-revoked sentiments... he was half of Ike & Tina Turner, a great musical duo, but he was the half that smacked Tina around. And we're just not down with that, Ike.

But with his death comes the nostalgia... the good ol' times. About leaving a good job in Memphis. Pumping octane in New Orleans.

What good times? Octane? What am I talking about?

Man, you know what I'm talking about:

He was a jerk, but Ike is the dude that made Soul go 'BAAAAAAAD'

Check out his flawless guitar rhythm, perfect for backing Tina's big voice...

From the Times obit:

"Few ever claimed that Turner was a nice man, but his personal failings cannot obscure the significant role he played in the development of blues, R&B and rock'n'roll. History would be unkind and unfair if it were to remember him only as “Mr Tina Turner”."

The Beatnix in concert

I never would have imagined it...

The Beatnix are an odd Beatles-imitation band from Australia that do amazing reproductions of classic Beatles performances...down to the grainy videos!

What's the big deal? There are a helluva lotta Beatles acts these days, especially with all the Beatles revival going on, notably in throwback movie, Across the Universe.

The freaky thing about this video is that The Beatnix mashed "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" with the lyrics of "Stairway to Heaven"

What?

Lookie:

Is it brilliant? It's surprisingly catchy, though Robert Plant's nonsense lyrics seem creepy and disturbing when sung like that.

It reminds me of another Australian musician who took on Stairway, Rolf Harris:

Led Zeppelin in 1968 Robert Plant

I suppose that's unfair.

To be honest, all the hype about Led Zeppelin's monumental reunion concert seemed to have been justified... at the peak, the site selling tickets saw around 2 billion hits, with 80 000 visitors a second.

I grew up listening to Led Zep, playing along Jimmy Page's riffs on my dusty acoustic guitar. Pretending I was a rock star. Imagining that I could play as fast or as fluidly as Page. It was tragic that John Bonham died, splitting up the band, but I remember thinking it was fitting that they refused to play out of respect for Bonham.

Well, respect has gone out the window, as the cha-ching of cash registers made the sound that brought them all together, replacing Bonham with his son.

There's been a lot of talk about the concert, though... Slate asked:Will Led Zeppelin play 'Stairway to Heaven'?, justly targeting the super-ultra-hit as something of a joke in the modern music world.

Last night, Led Zeppelin brought the house down, giving the fans what they wanted: the old songs, with the same energy, but less pretentious meandering through 45-minute solos.

From the AP:

"The New York Times reviewer Ben Ratliff said Plant "was authoritative; he was dignified."

"As for Mr. Page, his guitar solos weren't as frenetic and articulated as they used to be, but that only drove home the point that they were always secondary to the riffs, which on Monday were enormous, nasty, glorious," Ratliff wrote."

They opened with 'Good Times, Bad Times':

And even played 'Stairway to Heaven':

Led Zeppelin early days

They may be one of the most influential and notorious rock bands in the history of music, but Led Zeppelin has been holding out the lead from the new world of digital music.

But shit it, we've been busy. Uni finals have taken their toll as of this morning (the first one went alright, thanks for asking) and the dissertation is bound and ready to hand in (it's impeccable, thanks for asking).

PM was at ATP this weekend just gone, and there's a story to be told there about cars and keys and trains and Butlins staff ramming me and myriad musical highlights (Spiritualized covering Daniel Johnston, anyone?) and there are a load of CDs stacked up for me to sort out (don't worry, Mike from As Built PR!) and an interview with Dark Captain Light Captain in a couple of weeks.

Gruff Rhys Splits Up With Himself!

April 1st 2007 10:42
Welsh purveyor of genius weirdities has posted a video of a press conference detailing his splitting up with himself. He hinted on the release of his first album in 2005 that he might well be the first solo artist to split up with himself due to musical differences, and now it seems to have happened. Ah well...

Go here to see it, it's illuminating stuff.

New Beat Radio Mp3 to download

March 28th 2007 09:15
Is that the correct way to tabulate 'Mp3'? Who knows.

Remember last year when PM was going wicked mental for the bristly indie-popof New York's Beat Radio? Yeah, you do. Well, a new song is available for download. It's taken from a forthcoming EP called 'Safe Inside The Sound' (doesn't that sound reassuring?) which, on the strength of 'People Are Talking', should be pretty wonderful. Just listen to the bubbly keyboard noises under the verses... perfick.

One of the loveliest and most wickedly wicked badass up-to-date digital style websites The Downloader (for which PM is a monumentally proud contributor) is hosting a week of Bella Union-flavoured free stuff. Which means that you get free exclusive songs from one of the best labels on the planet. Bella Union is home to Explosions in the Sky, Midlake, Lift To Experience (you heard), My Latest Novel (who splashed about like victory fish in PM's end of year lists a few months back) and a million other wonderful things.

Today's track is an exclusive remix of an old Midlake song. PM is listening to it right now. It's fucking great.

Sorry So Much

March 18th 2007 11:24
For not being any good of late. Now PM is back, fully informed about such subjects as the imperialism and modernity in the music of Edward Elgar, the constant Nazism references in the films of Ken Russell, the authenticity of recorded birdsong incorporated into Western Art Music, and how much you can trust Everett True. Sometimes I love my degree.

Sorry we were gone so long!
