PM was at ATP this weekend just gone, and there's a story to be told there about cars and keys and trains and Butlins staff ramming me and myriad musical highlights (Spiritualized covering Daniel Johnston, anyone?) and there are a load of CDs stacked up for me to sort out (don't worry, Mike from As Built PR!) and an interview with Dark Captain Light Captain in a couple of weeks.

New Beat Radio Mp3 to download

March 28th 2007 09:15
Is that the correct way to tabulate 'Mp3'? Who knows.

Remember last year when PM was going wicked mental for the bristly indie-popof New York's Beat Radio? Yeah, you do. Well, a new song is available for download. It's taken from a forthcoming EP called 'Safe Inside The Sound' (doesn't that sound reassuring?) which, on the strength of 'People Are Talking', should be pretty wonderful. Just listen to the bubbly keyboard noises under the verses... perfick.

Sorry So Much

March 18th 2007 11:24
For not being any good of late. Now PM is back, fully informed about such subjects as the imperialism and modernity in the music of Edward Elgar, the constant Nazism references in the films of Ken Russell, the authenticity of recorded birdsong incorporated into Western Art Music, and how much you can trust Everett True. Sometimes I love my degree.

Sorry we were gone so long!

Go to the band's MySpace to listen to 'Robot Command Centre'. Mmm!

PM loves a little bit of clarinet. Used correctly, it can be the sound of sex and meekness, and Dark Captain Light Captain have definitely plumped for the former. Woodwind is something that can make or break a folk song (that was PM insulting Steeleye Span, insult fans), but there is enough veiled menace and potential energy in the ebony-black clarinet line to transfix. You'll listen very closely for its return at the tail-end of the song, and you'll miss it while it's gone.

Brian May Goes Mental

February 6th 2007 16:46
You may have already seen this at Drowned in Sound, but if not you're in for a treat. Maybe a chuckle. Maybe get some tea and a bourbon first. A writer for the completely perfect DiS, Gareth Dobson, has come under personal fire from Mr. Brian May with regards to his review of Mika's debut album. Review is here, Brian May's malarkey is here, and this is what Mr. May had to say:

"Good God ! Another nasty piece of work in Drowned In Sound. What is it about journalism which attracts the filthiest scum of the Earth ? What decent person could write something so despicably and nonsensically insulting as calling someone a 'diseased Leo Sayer"? I don't even want to get into the rest of this manifestly stupid article. This young guy Mika is just starting out, and has, by his own talent and hard work, already caused a splash. Why do these pitiful writers feel the need to try to vilify him, and bring him down? By all means criticise the music, if you really think you know better than he does. But these personal insults tell us nothing about anyone, except the diseased, jealous brain of the writer. I wonder what YOU look like, Gareth Dobson, you fabulous intellectual giant, you. You'd better be good looking, writing garbage like this. Even if you were, you would still be worthy of nothing but our contempt. Take my advice. Get a proper job. Make something of your own that gives pleasure to people; have the courage to put YOUR creativity on the line - and see what treatment YOU get from the 'critics' of the world. Meanwhile ... shame on you.

Future Of The Left Video Snip

February 2nd 2007 13:50
Here's a tiny weeny bit of Future Of The Left playing their 'Fingers Become Thumbs' single out on a record label. Oh yeah, it's on Too Pure. PM shot this sneaky video on Tuesday at the band's 100 Club show. There were posters stuck up all over the venue indicating to the audience that videos and pictures were more than encouraged, and could even be included in the band's forthcoming video! Woo!

Go here for it, and here's a lovely picture. PM also took a video of the hilarious encore drum solo deconstruction, but that's on my homeboy Rob's computer... bah. We'll sort it soon.

Remember in the Summer when PM was giddy about the Green Man Festival? Thought you'd read enough about psychedelia and folk and marshes and castles and Erotic Volvo from Misty's Big Adventure, didn't you? Well, in the words of Celine Dion, it's all coming back to me now.

Headliners have been announced as Joanna Newsom and ex-Led Zep croak-meister Robert Plant. That's good. Plant will presumably quoting Welsh-language poetry and shouting "Stryder!" like a banshee on crack whilst having pants thrown at his satchel-esque face, but that'll be a laugh nonetheless. And Joanna Newsom, well, PM is seeing her this April at ATP, so we'll have a good idea of what to expect come August. Her 'Ys' record is cool though. Ha, all those bears...

Hey, you know where the best writing on the web is, don't you? Course! It's at Tangents! The legendary fanzine for Postcard Records has been made available for perusal via this link here, thanks to one lovely Tangents reader. Boy oh boy, for those who are old enough, this is surely a trip down memory lane towards nostalgia street, stopping for a melancholy pie at the old remembrance café. Two of the most perenially entertaining faces of pop have entrusted their lives unto one another in a matrimony destined to become legendary. New Precious Fathers Session Tracks!

December 20th 2006 17:33
Sweet Merciful Crap!

It's Winter. And to celebrate, you should immediately go here and listen to six disgustingly good Precious Fathers session tracks off some radio station or other in Vancouver. Truly, the minutiae of their song construction knows no living rivals. Listen and marvel at the humbly un-distorted guitars, the confidently slappy (certainly not sloppy) drumming and the most ethereal of icy atmospheres. '100% Pure Rock' vibes is a standard PF lulling towards the floor of your heart, and 'Past It Pastures' (from their self-titled debut record, which everyone in the world should own) is typically prone to wonderful accelerations and reclines into steay buoyancy like no-one else. The real interest, though, is 'Pock Lips', a hypnotic departure from what we've come to expect. All the rotaional guitars locking like a lock with the drums seem somehow temporalised and overruled by some weird spoken word gibberish, completing a frightening textural innovation for Precious Fathers.
