2011 Solo Performer of the Year releases her first CD
“THERE are few mezzosopranos anywhere who can sing Handel as well as Fiona Campbell.”
“This leading young Australian singer possesses just the right delicacy and nobility of expression to lift Handelian roles into the sublime….The combination of Campbell's smoothly rich, slightly dark-hued voice, her superlative phrasing, and the fresh spontaneity of her ornamentation, makes for a compelling performance.”
“Alessandro Scarlatti's Bella madre de fiori is magnificent music... Voluptuous and similarly unerring in her judgment, Campbell again shows how naturally at home she is with Baroque interpretation.”
The Australia review of “Love & Loss”, 21 Jan 2011
Fiona Campbell is one of Australia’s most loved and dynamic singers of her generation. At the recent 2011 Limelight Awards, Fiona won the Best Solo Performance of the Year for her Haunting Handel concert series, with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. With a busy performing schedule ahead, Fiona has released a stunning debut recording “Love Loss”.
In a world of single tracks and one-minute attention spans, Fiona has made the bold choice of recording three complete cantatas for her first solo album;
“I chose these works because the music is exquisite and moves me to the core. Three stories of love and loss, expressing human fragility at it’s most beautiful and most painful moments, veiled within a glorious world of sound – written by three of my favourite masters of story telling: Scarlatti, Haydn and Handel."
Packaged in a stunning presentation, with full texts and translations, Fiona has chosen to present a classic nude of herself on the cover;
“To me this image is a beautiful representation of all the emotions portrayed on the disc; love, solitude, abandonment, loss, sensuality, sexuality, vulnerability and pathos. I wanted to do a classic nude for this album, because even though the music was written hundreds of years ago, the essence of human emotion is still relevant and contemporary. I wanted to show that this is a real woman, experiencing all the passion and tragedy of love and loss.”
When it comes to the music, Fiona is particularly thrilled to have captured the unique sound of the Fortepiano, in Haydn’s masterpiece, Arianna a Naxos; “Neal Peres da Costa is a joy to work with. He is able to portray every nuance in the score beautifully and we have captured the delicacy and transparency of the instrument so genuinely, that you feel as though you are in the very same room.”
“Love & Loss” is Fiona’s inaugural solo release, and is available in all ABC stores and online.
