Jim Noir - Tower Of Love

Yeah, weez countin still, braaap!
Album no. 9: Jim Noir - Tower Of Love (Barsuk)
There's always a stigma about 'summer' records. Jim Noir's 'Tower Of Love' could well have been marketed that way, but Baruk wisely saw fit to keep it perennial. Despite coming out in the long hot summer, 'Tower Of Love' is just as enjoyable in the rain-soaked south of England as it might be in the palm-shaded shines of Italy. Oddly enough, many songs are reminiscent of the simple flute and guitar jazz-isms of the soundtrack to the original Italian Job film. 'Eanie Meany', particularly, is joyously simple and psychedelic, innocently skipping past and singing 'steal my football, run away, get it back someday,' as if uttered by a ten-year-old.
That and the cheekiness of 'Key of C', the bouncing lilt of 'My Patch', and about a million other moments where harmonies with SFA-like triadic precision keep 'Tower Of Love' wonderfully fresh and simple, but still imbued with a popping sense of melody and great craft. A beautifully fun record.
