Pop Musicology - "The Second Drummer Drowned"

Jarvis Cocker's New Cuss-Heavy Protest Song

July 5th 2006 22:53
The former Pulp frontman has released a brand new slice of politico-pop fury called 'Running the World', and here it is. It contains naughty words. Lots of them.

It seems that Cocker is none-too pleased with the post-Live8 financial furore that surrounds the World Leaders he rather hilariously castigates in this epic of... poltical proportions?

Anyways, his motives are noble and he admirably claims no deep knowledge of the situation. Reading the blurb that accompanys the song reminds us of what a treasure Cocker still is, that he is defiantly one of us - confused by it all, angry about it but not sure why.

So go listen.

I heard this song the other day and its not too bad. I'm not the biggest fan of Pulp - they're ok but I could never see past songs like Common People, another "Shins" or "Belle and Sebastian" situation like we talked about here. The recent review I read of Jarv's album was generally positive, and seemed to highlight his ingenius lyrics which subtly reflect his heavy political opinions (though obviously this single is an exception). I would like to hear the album if I can.

i hope his new material is as good as this song. but it'll have to be pretty special to beat pulp's different class. it is one of the angriest records i can think of, but people tend not to realise cos it's all packaged in these really smart pop-song guises (much like Belle and Sebastian, in fact).

cocker has now maybe learnt to express his anger more vividly by... swearing gratuitously, i guess.

Cocker seems to have travelled a reverse path to Tom Delonge, formerly member of Blink 182, Boxcar Racer, and now frontman of Angels and Airwaves. Delonge went from angry high school kid with a brain full of nothing but cursing, to a soft and politically aware father, not wanting to hurt anyone's feelings, but still wanting to be heard. Both paths seem subject to criticism - where with Delonge, teenagers everywhere will disown Delonge as someone who's "softened up," the politically correct and conscious (though I'm not sure how many Pulp fans would be very PC) followers of Cocker would see him as someone who's aging backwards. Guess it's each man for his own.

Is it just me, or is there something about Cocker that reminds you of Dylan Moran?
