"When seeking truth the answer is the road, when seeking wisdom the journey is your home"
Just prior to their debut Australian tour please find FUTURE ISLANDS latest single TOMORROW as released on 7" vinyl by London label Upset the Rhythm.
Since 2008’s ‘Wave Like Home’ debut album on Upset The Rhythm, Future Islands have gone from strength to strength, writing two classic albums of romantic yet melancholic synthpop for Thrill Jockey as well as exhaustively touring Europe and America to frenzied devotion. This new 7” on Upset The Rhythm ‘Tomorrow’ / ‘The Fountain’ sees the band at the top of their game, releasing some of their most compelling and sophisticated songs yet, building on the aching themes and poignant focus of their last album ‘On The Water’.
‘Tomorrow’ is a soulful swoon, its light tread is mesmerising amongst the slow burning synth cycles and relaxed bass progress. Samuel T. Herring’s ever-impressive vocal has never sounded more akin to Sam Cooke as he smoothly laments “I’m saying sorry every time we talk” before careening into a flight of sustained, arguably uncontrollable emotion. Some choice, additional vocals from Jenn Wasner (of Wye Oak), Lexie Mountain and Elena Johnston only make the song seem more impassioned; its ardent nature perfectly rendered into melody.
Drifting in from the waters are special guests RICK FIGHTS (Matt Somers from I Heart Hiroshima in solo mode) on both Melbourne and Sydney shows. Plus also floating in for Sydney will be HELLO VERA. Further info below. Tickets for these debut Australia shows are moving rapidly and may even sell-out prior to the night.
From out of the flat grass comes the release of Baltimore's rising FUTURE ISLANDS latest album On the Water - their third LP and one of the recent biggest selling releases for Thrill Jockey in the USA. The crashing waves also wash in their debut Australian tour for late September. See dates below
Baltimore trio Future Islands' romantic synth sound scales new heights with third album On the Water, submerged currents of Simple Minds, Ultravox, Brian Eno, Japan, Talk Talk, David Bowie surface in their most ambitious and fully realized statement yet. Built around a song cycle exploring love, loss, and memory, the album finds the band continuing to deliver pounding rhythms, swelling melodies, and undeniable hooks finding new ways to probe inner space and tug at hearts.
A continual tide of touring across the US, Canada and Europe from 2006 at times with the likes of Dan Deacon, Okkervil River, Titus Andronicus, Javelin but more just coasting along the crest of their own wave has cascaded into an incoming tide of interest.
