Pop Musicology - "The Second Drummer Drowned"

Easy Anthems

October 18th 2006 10:46
After he saw PM's wee critique of the excellent Beat Radio LP (still downloadable, so, y'know... get it...), their keyboard/guitar fiddler informed us of another project he is fifty percent of - Easy Anthems. Loving parents Vanesa and Philip Jimenez form this folky duo, who have written the following about themselves:

"We Broke Up, And We Made Music, And We Got Back Together, And We Made Music, And We Got Married, And We Made Music, And We Broke Up, And We Made A Kid, And We Got Back Together, And We Made Music"

You can't really argue with that.

Easy Anthems

Of course, anyone with remote involvement in Beat Radio is bound to be spiffing, and Easy Anthems are rather great in that capacity. Their track 'Go Back To Pittsburgh' has struck me greatly. Beginning as a dippy sort of Yo La Tengo bouncefest with stomp to spare, it slowly burns into something a great deal more meaty and rewarding than it should, given the small sum of its parts. With only a little bit of piano and guitar and plodding drums to bolster the song, the voices need to be a force for good, a force that can bob along with the minimalism but not overpower it. Luckily, the tandem performance of Jimenez and Ramirez comes off like a woozy-as-hell tribute to Thom Yorke and Nina Nastasia, a dream combination of psych-y warbles and death-defying harmonies. But back to the swelling. As they sing about not singing about revolution, the stomping just will not cease, and it is only alleviated by... gasp... a gaspingly pretty violin dancing inbetween the voices like that bit in the Wicker Man where the naked women jump over the fire. You know, Christopher Lee would probably love this song too. Then we get a juddering clash of feedback and sloshes of guitar, before finally winding down again, the wailing harmonies still wandering around your head unsure of where to go.

Advice? Go here and listen. They have an album coming out at the end of the month, check back and PM will get you details. Or even better, give Easy Anthems a visit. They'll probably know.
