Devendra Banhart - Carmensita
August 4th 2008 02:18
From BoingBoing, a music video from psycha-Texan folk musician, Devendra Banhart, who makes this twisted Technicolor dream of a music video, complete with angry Hindu gods and Natalie Portman.
Indian culture sure looks a lot more appealing when mixed with popular actresses and slick colours. How did Natalie Portman get involved with this? Did someone approach her at a party and say 'Dude... we'd totally like to film a video with you as an Indian princess...'
It's a compelling gambit. An actress with the right face looks dynamite in the luscious colours of Indian silk, and Portman has the right features to almost pass as a princess. Or perhaps that's from latent memories of "The Phantom Menace"?
Banhart's song is delightfully infectious, with enough Spanish lounge funk to play languidly on a summer stereo, but the video is camp enough for sardonic nightclubs with ironic cocktails.
Of course, here's a link to Banhart's album, Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Mountain, which could light your ears to the New Weird America sound.
