Metallica, Megadeth and a Life in Metal

‘It’s not how big your pencil is, it’s how you write your name’
Dave Mustaine
Here, for the first time, Dave Mustaine tells the tale of the two biggest metal bands in history; a story yet to be told from the inside. American heavy metal pioneers Metallica rose to international fame in the 1980s, selling over 90 million records worldwide, making them the most successful heavy metal band ever. But despite their enormous success together there was bad blood between Mustaine, Metallica’s lead guitarist, and the other members of the band. In April of 1983, partly due to his alcoholism and partly due to personality clashes with founding members James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, Mustaine was fired from Metallica and unceremoniously dropped off at a Greyhound station in New York with a ticket back to LA.
Despite this blow, Mustaine returned to metal with new band Megadeth, pioneers of the thrash metal movement. Selling more than 20 million albums worldwide, including six consecutive platinum records, and garnering seven consecutive Grammy nominations for Best Metal Performance, Megadeth is the second most commercially successful heavy metal band in music history — the first being Mustaine’s former band and rival: Metallica.
Along with the notoriety for his antics and feuds, Dave Mustaine is considered one of the greatest heavy metal guitarists of all time. From the early, crazy days of Metallica to his split with the band and ruling over Megadeth, Dave has seen and experienced it all. And now he's telling it all in his startlingly candid, in-your-face memoir. Like Slash, The Dirt, and Sound of the Beast, Mustaine is an insider’s look at the sordid world of heavy metal.
