DANANANANAYKROYD - Demo for Download
July 24th 2006 01:46
Simply the best band name ever. For now, anyway.
An unsigned bunch from Glasgow, DANANANANAYKROYD have been gaining airplay from Radio 1's Huw Stephens as well as XFM and are amassing a small but very well-typed following on the internet. Their songs recall Black Sabbath, but with a speed-addled Cedric Bixler on vocals and some sort of elephant/triceratops hybrid for a rhythm section. The segmented, fragmentary song-structures ensure no loss of interest and the knack for riffery is blinding.
Each song is an evolution in itself. 'Greater Than Symbol' manages to cannily incorporate tribal percussion (they have two drummers - woop!), some spiky piss-off-Bloc-Party post-punk and a destructively violent metal collapse of an ending. Mini-epics such as these do not just fall out of a few practice sessions, oh no. Something more sinister, more beguiling and siren-like is at work here. Dense and extremely well-bred musical sense is inherent in the clashing chords and impeccably-poised chugs of detuned guitar. The Cherub Rock rip-off of an ending on 'Song One Puzzle' is no less pleasing, thanks to the chasm-like contrast with the business-like opening arpeggiated spikes and shout-alongs. Imagine Mclusky started writing an opera with rock instruments, got halfway through, got bored and just stuck to punk rock. It's a bit like that might be... yeah.
My goodness, MySpace these people and download their demo. It will make your Monday. And look how in the picture one of them is holding a Half Man Half Biscuit record. Ha!
