South Australian School of Art Honours graduate Ray Harris presents a solo exhibition of new video and sculptural work in the Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia’s Project Space, coinciding with the 2010 SALA Festival.
Titled Come sail with me down denial, the exhibition is an exploration of the everyday fantasies and self-deceptions people create to escape reality.
Ray has created a series of performative videos that involve living or acting out the repressed or delusional self, as well as a collection of sculptural boxes containing peephole dioramas; each embodying the notion of looking into the mind of a person and perceiving them as a physically inhabitable space.
“The new work I have created for this exhibition continues my investigation of the psychological issues of identity and self-concept,” Ray says. “In particular, the prevailing self-delusions, deceptions and fantasies people create, believe and rely on everyday to cope with the complexities of repressed desires, anxieties and psychological pain.”
Graduating with First Class Honours in 2009, Ray Harris has exhibited widely since 2005, including at the Fantastic Borders exhibition in Rotterdam late last year. Ray’s work was selected for the Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition 2010, and will also be featured during this year’s SALA Moving Image Project at the Queens Theatre.
The South Australian School of Art is a Helpmann Academy partner, and Ray’s upcoming SALA exhibition has been supported by a Helpmann Academy grant.
The Helpmann Academy for the Visual & Performing Arts assists emerging artists to make the leap into professional practice, by providing a range of programs and opportunities including exhibitions, awards, grants, mentorships and international exchanges. The Academy’s partners are TafeSA - the Adelaide College of the Arts and Vizarts O’Halloran Hill; University of South Australia - South Australian School of Art; University of Adelaide – Elder Conservatorium; Flinders University - Flinders Drama & Flinders Screen Production; Adelaide Central School of Art.
