Brian May Goes Mental

February 6th 2007 16:46
You may have already seen this at Drowned in Sound, but if not you're in for a treat. Maybe a chuckle. Maybe get some tea and a bourbon first. A writer for the completely perfect DiS, Gareth Dobson, has come under personal fire from Mr. Brian May with regards to his review of Mika's debut album. Review is here, Brian May's malarkey is here, and this is what Mr. May had to say:

"Good God ! Another nasty piece of work in Drowned In Sound. What is it about journalism which attracts the filthiest scum of the Earth ? What decent person could write something so despicably and nonsensically insulting as calling someone a 'diseased Leo Sayer"? I don't even want to get into the rest of this manifestly stupid article. This young guy Mika is just starting out, and has, by his own talent and hard work, already caused a splash. Why do these pitiful writers feel the need to try to vilify him, and bring him down? By all means criticise the music, if you really think you know better than he does. But these personal insults tell us nothing about anyone, except the diseased, jealous brain of the writer. I wonder what YOU look like, Gareth Dobson, you fabulous intellectual giant, you. You'd better be good looking, writing garbage like this. Even if you were, you would still be worthy of nothing but our contempt. Take my advice. Get a proper job. Make something of your own that gives pleasure to people; have the courage to put YOUR creativity on the line - and see what treatment YOU get from the 'critics' of the world. Meanwhile ... shame on you.

Cheers
Brian"

"The filthiest scum of the Earth", eh Brian? It's not nice to hurl insults around, now is it? Two wrongs don't make a right and all that... And what a polite finish! Cheers to you, Brian!

I don't necessarily agree with the backlash against that review, but over time my opinion of DiS has only worsened. Some of the writing may be quite good, but for the most part, they tend to be a little schizophrenic in their approach, eloquently trashing pretty much everyone, then giving bands ratings like 8 and 9. The comments section is just horrible such as:

"Too bloody right
I don't know what else to say apart from Mika sucks and his music sucks."

It gets a little hard to read DiS when the comments basically follow that pattern, as does some of the writing, sadly.

i don't know, i still really like DiS, but then i'm biased cos i write for them! some comments people leave are harsh, true, but it's all just... err... forceful opinion!

any schizophrenia is just because they have so many different writers covering the same bands. several times i've given hellish reviews to bands that got praised by someone else. it's more honest than Q or the NME telling their writers which bands they're allowed to slag off.

I say good on Brian for sticking up for Mika it was a completely pathetic review attacking not just Mika's music but also his looks which there is absolutely NO need for! it's just not on that kind of personal attack!

I think Brian is a great guy & it's great to know he suports my fave 'new' singer Mika It is great someone like Brian will leap to Mika's defence whenever someone attacks him

go Brian!!!

Brian May has a point. There was no need to slag off Mika's looks and take it to a personal level. They are completely irrelevant to the album and the comments might have been hurtful to Mika if he read the review.
