Blink 182 Reveal Reasons Behind Split. And They're Hilarious.
August 15th 2006 18:13
So the reason they finally killed the band that wouldn't die is not that they got their pee-pees caught in the zipper. Nor is it because all that naked running around cities was tiring them out. Even more shockingly, it is not because people finally realised what an absolute inhuman atrocity they were as musicians and people.
Instead, it's because one of them became a massive dictator, made serious music and then realised what a sell-out and career suicide it would be to go back to making dick jokes. Tom Delonge basically told the rest of his classmates that he didn't fancy touring with them any more. Or recording. Or practising. Or sharing oxygen.
As Mark Hoppus explained to a fansite:
"...our old manager flew out and sat us all down in the dressing room before the show. He needed to have a meeting about the spring tour. He and Tom sat on one side of the room and Travis and I sat at the other. Our old manager did all the talking."
Presumably he handed out the nappies and lollies as well? What a bunch of fucking babies! You're in a band that is primarily existent only to make fourteen-year-old boys laugh for three minutes at a time. Stop trying to elevate it to anything more important than that. Your audience isn't going to care why you broke up, they'll just pass their Blink best-ofs down to their adolescent younger siblings when the time is right.
Hoppus continues...
"Travis and I were super bummed and angry at the position we were being put in. We understood that Tom wanted to be with his family. We all did. We all love our families and want to be with them. At the same time, this is our job."
Well, it's hardly 9-5. Maybe they should prepare themselves for a lifetime of office high-jinks, seeing as they're going to be-oh shit they've formed a spin-off.
Ah well, it was nice for a while. Although, read the interview a little further and Hoppus speaks utterly correctly about Delonge's Angels & Airwaves project. By which I mean he says it's a load of old cock.
"This new album seemed forced and self-important. Like he was stomping his feet and insisting “I AM AN ARTIST NOW!!!” Like he is more interested in TALKING about making good music rather than just MAKING good music."
Well done sir!

'oh, hello, you must be here to clean up all my crap.'
'yes, yes i am. i was in a popular joke band once, then i started my own serious band and it was saccharine to the point of insipid offensiveness. it was critically derided from the get-go, but i kept at it. in the end, we called it a day because we didn't sell any records. my pomposity and self-belief was terribly misguided...'
'please just clean up my crap.'

i have no qualms about the fact that the members of blink 182 are better musicians than me. but, as a consumer, i have the right to complain at what is thrust upon me by the music industry. without criticism, there would be no discourse in popular music, and discourse is very healthy. i realise that i can never hope to be as successful as them, and it does not bother me in the slightest.
as for selling 10 million records being a bastion of authenticity, look no further than the myriad artists who have sold many, many more and, i'm sure, you might consider inferior (the spice girls, daniel o'donnel, barry manilow.... though i LOVE manilow...). it matters not how many records you sell, it's how good you are. many artists can't rub two farthings together and produce more rewarding music than blink 182 could ever hope to.
blink 182 were, at the end of their career, a tool of the industry. anyone who thinks otherwise should read this book:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Producing-Pop-Culture-Conflict-Industry/dp/0340575123/sr=8-8/qid=1171365734/ref=sr_1_8/202-4253430-2515036?ie=UTF8&s=books
it will tell you, first-hand, all you need to know about the inner workings of the music industry. very revealing stuff.
finally, to lambast PM personally in the fashion you have just done is no better than the lambasting PM gave to Blink 182. i have a life, and i like it very much thankyou. those in glass houses and all that...
