Beat Radio Album Download!

October 10th 2006 14:20
PM's new favourite band Beat Radio have finally finished recording and mastering their new LP, The Great Big Sea. First things first, go and download it cos it's really special. Second of all, here's a snippet of an interview I did with their head honcho, Brian Sendrowitz, YET TO BE PUBLISHED! WOO! You're all ahead of the press, and don't it feel so good?!

There is a strong 4-track lo-fi ethic to Beat Radio. Is that the most comfortable way for you to develop ideas?

BS: Yeah. The 4-track/lo-fi thing came out of necessity, but it ended up becoming sort of a breakthrough for me. I had been writing songs on the acoustic guitar for years and I think you limit yourself a bit that way. With the 4-track I started writing to these dumb casio drum beats and it kind of opened things up. Also, you can do something that is a bit more pop, and it still has a sort of edge to it. Plus there's something about recording songs quickly, as you write them, when you don't even quite know them yet. As a fan, I've always been the kind of guy to like the demos more than the official recordings.

The term 'band' seems to be erroneous – could you tell us about the 'collective' status of Beat Radio?

BS: I shy away from it sometimes because it feels like ever since Broken Social Scene got so big everyone is calling themselves a collective all of the sudden. It is more truthful though. We've been a band at times, and sometimes more than others. I love collaborating, and I like the idea of having the line-up be a dynamic thing, to keep it exciting. We're all involved in different projects and I think we're better for it. Also, with Beat Radio, I want to keep it a focused vision, steer the direction of things, and do all the writing myself. I've been in bands before when it's a strict democracy and everyone contributes equally but the essence of what I was trying to create always seemed to get diluted.

You're doing a show with the Butterflies of Love. I interviewed them once and they just kept talking about sex. What are your experiences of them?

BS: I don't know much about them but i think their music is amazing. I can't wait to do that show with them. Also, strangely, one of the original members of Beat Radio, Tim Lannen, is their drummer's cousin. It's kind of a bizarre coincidence because they're not from around here and we just ended up on this bill with them through the incredible people at Asbury Lanes. Tim has a band in New York now called The Diggs who I'd really recommend seeking out because they're amazing also.

What can we expect from the debut LP? Does 'The Ecstatic EP' give us any clues?

BS: Yeah, there's some more lo-fi stuff, some different versions of things, and some instrumentals. I think it's a bit more of a balanced representation of what Beat Radio is where the EP was more of a documentation of what we were doing with our live shows around this time last year.

What a gent. So yeah, download it and stuff. The full interview will be available at some point soon!
