Pop Musicology - "The Second Drummer Drowned"

Sneaky Sound System - 2 (Two)

August 22nd 2008 07:20
Sneaky Sound System

Sydney-based Sneaky Sound System is a three-piece Australian pop band made up of Miss Connie (Connie Mitchell), Black Angus (Angus McDonald), and MC Double D (Daimon Downey).

The trio released their self-titled debut album in 2006 to huge success with sales surpassing twice platinum and at one point, they had four singles in the Top 40. Their single ‘I Love It’ had the longest chart run in Oz history!

Sneaky Sound System

Featuring pop-like catchy tunes, their background lies in the country’s exploding dance scene - a freshing change in a time of predictable R&B tunes and Indie bands. Their music overflows with hooky choruses and colourful character and reflects their distinct personalities and roles. Black Angus, named after a corrupt copper from Oz TV series ‘Blue Murder’, is the musical dynamo; MC Double D is the flamboyant showman with a mic; and Connie, the quirky front woman.

The pop group has now challenged themselves to emulate, and perhaps, even surpass their past success with their sophomore album - 2 (Two). The brand new studio album - released exactly two years after their first on August 16, 2008 - was mixed by Spike Stent and Paul PDub Walton of Madonna, Björk, Massive Attack and Gwen Stefani fame at Olympic Studios in London.

Coldplay - Viva La Vida

Coldplay

Following the success of their no.1 album X&Y (2005), English alternative rock band Coldplay have released their fourth album Viva La Vida this month.

Hailed by lead singer Chris Martin as a 'new direction' for the band, work began on the new album in 2006 and was produced by legendary producer Brian Eno featuring songs that are "bracingly different from Coldplay hits like 'Clocks' and 'Speed of Sound' with darker lyrics, distorted guitars and more prominent percussion, and much less use of Martin's trademark falsetto vocals.

The end result is an album that is noticeably different and rougher around the edges but yet still distinctly Coldplay at the same time. The album's second single 'Viva la Vida' became the band's first no.1 single on the US Hot 100 singles chart - the first song by a British group to reach no.1 on the chart since 'Wannabe' by the Spice Girls in 1997.

Viva La Vida also continues the band's commercial success by selling over 500,000 in its first 10 days on sale in the UK alone and is widely tipped to become one of Coldplay's best selling albums to date.

Tracks to look out for: "Life In Technicolor", "Viva La Vida" and "Violet Hill".[rollingstone.com]
