Pop Musicology - "The Second Drummer Drowned"

The Bluetones

February 18th 2008 08:00
The Bluetones

Originally named The Bottlegarden, The Bluetones were formed in 1994 by original band members, Mark Morriss (vocals), Adam Devlin (guitar), Scott Morriss (bass guitar) and Eds Chesters (drums).

The band name was apparently chosen after Adam had a dream about the best band in the world and they were called The Bluetones, so the next day the band began calling themselves The Bluetones although in another interview, the band said the name was chosen as an anagram of "The Subtle One".

The Bluetones Expecting To Fly

The Bluetones rose to prominence during the mid 1990s - the height of the BritPop era - with their hit song "Slight Return", a single from their debut album Expecting to Fly released in 1996. The album was a bestseller and huge commercial success for the band and it proved so popular that it dislodged Oasis' (What's the Story) Morning Glory? off the No.1 spot on the UK music charts upon its release. The album spawned other hit singles including "Bluetonic" and "Cut Some Rug".

The bands sophomore album, Return to the Last Chance Saloon, was released in 1998 and had some huge shoes to fill. Despite never reaching the same heights as their debut effort, the album was well-received by fans and spawned four singles: "Solomon Bites the Worm", "If...", "Sleazy Bed Track" and "4-Day Weekend".

The Bluetones Science and Nature

By the time the third album, Science & Nature, came along in 2000, the BritPop era was well and truly over but despite this, the album reached No.7 on the UK music charts - two positions higher than their previous effort. Together with the addition of new member Richard Payne (keyboards and guitar), the band achieved sound commercial success with hit songs "Keep the Home Fires Burning" and "Autophilia".

The Bluetones released Luxembourg in 2003 as a four-some once again after the departure of Richard Payne in 2001. The album peaked at No.49 - the band's lowest charting record to-date - but their popularity with fans was sustained through extensive touring, earning them the tag of "Britpop survivors" by the press.

The Bluetones

The band's most recent and self-titled album was released in late 2006. Hoping to recapture some of the magic of their debut album, The Bluetones teamed up with former producer Hugh Jones to largely positive reviews from critics and fans. Despite the album charting at an all-time low of No.100, it still spawned the singles "My Neighbour's House", "Head On A Spike" and "Surrendered".

The Bluetones remains present to this day and are currently on a mini-tour of Scotland.

Rogue Traders

Rogue Traders

The Rogue Traders were formed in 2002 and are currently one of the hottest Australian bands both locally and internationally.

The original members of the band, James Ash and Steve Davis, released their debut album in 2003 titled We Know What You're Up To and subsequently won an ARIA award for Best Dance Track for the song "One of My Kind".

Despite the success, the band never really took off until they returned in 2005 as a four-some with new members - lead singer Natalie Bassingthwaighte (actress - Neighours, Television host - So You Think You Can Dance Australia), drummer Cameron McGlinchey and Danny Spencer (Steve Davis left the band after the first album).

Armed with a new recording contract with Sony BMG, the Rogue Traders released Here Come the Drums and achieved immediate success through the album's first single, “Voodoo Child”. The single reached No.4 on the ARIA music charts, No.7 in New Zealand and No.3 in the UK and was nominated for three awards at the 2005 ARIA awards.

Other singles from the album, "Way to Go!", "Watching You", "We're Coming Home" and "In Love Again" achieved similar successes locally and internationally. Despite the album itself entering the ARIA charts at No.9, its enduring fourteen consecutive weeks on the charts saw it peak at No.2. It went onto become the six highest selling album for 2006 and was certified four times platinum.

After such a successful album, the next one was always going to be big shoes to fill but the Rogue Traders did just that with their third studio release, Better in the Dark, in 2007. The album cemented the band's status as one of the hottest current Australian bands by debuting at No.4 on the ARIA charts and achieved gold status in just its first week of release.

The album has spawned two hit singles thus far - "Don't You Wanna Feel" and "I Never Liked You".

Spice Girls

Spice Girls

The Spice Girls are arguably the world's most successful all-girl pop group.

The band was formed in 1994, but the girls initially met in 1992 through auditions while chasing work in shows and as TV extras. Four of the girls, Melanie C, Mel B, Victoria Adams and Geri together with Michelle Stephenson later became part of a girl group called Touch, the brain child of Bob & Chris Herbert and Heart Management Ltd.

Spice Girls

Michelle's participation in the group was short-lived and was later replaced by Emma Bunton and the Spice Girls as we know it, was formed - unofficially. (Spice had been Geri's idea of a new name for the girls but that was scrapped - a US rapper had already used that name).

Spice Girls Spice

Under the tutelage of Simon Fuller, the girls officially became the Spice Girls and were signed to a recording deal with Virgin Records. In July 1996, a feature in 'Top of the Pops' magazine gave the Spice Girls their nicknames - Posh, Baby, Scary, Sporty and Ginger - and in that same month, the group's first single "Wannabe" (widely regarded as their signature song) was released, entering the UK charts at No.3. Just a week after its release, the single rose to No.1 where it stayed for seven weeks making them the first all-female group to top the charts with their debut single.

Spiceworld

The single became an international smash hit and pushed the anticipation for their debut album to fever-pitch. In November 2006, the girls delivered Spice which sold two million copies in the first two weeks of it being released. Spice became the biggest album of 1996 in the UK, and the biggest album of 1997 in the US, selling 10 million copies worldwide in less than seven months. Spice Girls became the first british group to score a No.1 debut single and debut album in the US - a feat that not even the legendary Beatles could manage. Later updates put the UK sales figure around three million and worldwide sales at some 23 million.

Spice Girls Forever

The group's sophomore album, Spiceworld, was released in November 1997 and shot straight to No.1. It produced 3 top twenty singles in the US, four top 2 singles (including 3 number one singles) in the UK, and 5 number one singles in Asia. It has sold 18 million copies worldwide.

However, just six months later, Geri aka Ginger Spice left the group citing 'differences' as the reason for her departure. The girls soldiered on with their US tour and in October 2000, they released Forever - their last album of new material and their first without Geri Halliwell.

Spice Girls Greatest Hits

In 2001, the girls parted ways to pursue their own interests and after a six-year hiatus, all five girls including Geri re-formed in June 2007 to launch a World Tour alongside the release of their Greatist Hits album, featuring two new songs "Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)" and "Voodoo".

Spice Girls are currently on the US leg of their World Tour.

Francoise Hardy - Ce petit coeur

Francoise Hardy poster
Francoise Hardy was a hugely influential French singer that brought a delicious mix of music and fashion to the 60s... her slender figure, dressed in fitted outfits made her look elegant. Her songs were unusually catchy, even for those of us without enough French to understand what the hell she was saying...
