Pop Musicology - "The Second Drummer Drowned"

Ukelele and Washboard

December 18th 2008 09:34
Old School Ukelele Kazoo and Washboard
For this post, we're going back.

How far we going back?

Real far back.

Out to 1929, comes this rare video of two cats, one on the uke, one on kazoo and washboard, getting down like Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.

That guy on the washboard? Money. Anyone that can pick up a kazoo and a washboard and play a good jam without coming off like a eccentric loser is a big mack daddy player. You know how it is - if you dropped a little improvised washboard on the street today, people'd be throwing $5 bills at your feet.

Give those kids a room out back, give 'em some beans and pork, and tell 'em to play here three times a week. Kids from the city will love it!

New Kids on the Block - The Block

September 10th 2008 00:45
The Block New Kids on the Block

New Kids on the Block, pioneers of the 'boy-band' genre in the late 80s and early 90s, reformed in 2008 with all the original members - Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood, Joey McIntyre, Jordan Knight and Jonathan Knight - returning to the group after 14 years of disbandment.

The five-piece band scored a string of hits in the late 80s / early 90s with "Cover Girl", "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)" and their biggest hit of all, "Step by Step" - a platinum selling single from their 1990 album of the same name.

New Kids on the Block

Due to waning popularity, the group disbanded in 1994 to pursue their own interests, start a family and even new careers. Despite several attempts to coerce the band into reforming temporarily for one-off shows, nothing materialised until an official announcement was made in April 2008 that the group was reuniting with the intention of recording a new album and planning to tour.

Five months after the group officially reformed, NKOTB's fifth and latest album, The Block, was released in September 2008 featuring collaborations with some of the hottest artists in the world including Ne-Yo, The Pussycat Dolls, Akon and Timbaland.

The album's first single, the mellow jam "Summertime" has so far peaked at no.36 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and no.90 on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart. R&B superstar Ne-Yo appears on the second single, “Single” and other collaborations include “Grown Man” (with The Pussycat Dolls and uber-producer Teddy Riley), and “Full Service” (with super-group New Edition).

"Handlebars" by Flobots

September 8th 2008 23:41
Flobots are a Denver-based hip hop group that have been together since 2000, producing alternative hip hop with social conscious. You might be getting a little weary of preachy hip hop, but as long as hip hop has a powerful commercial presence, there'll always be the artists that want to push back.

This year, they came to prominence with a song called "Handlebars", which would appear to be about a guy riding a bike with no handlebars.

It's only after the music video got posted to Reddit did people start listening to the content of the song, noting that the video, an animated video, was chilling when matched with the lyrics.

Lyrics to "Handlebars" by Flobots

Here's the music video:

MC Johnny 5 says the song is a tribute to the potential of the human spirit, which may be expended for peace, for war, for creativity or destruction:

"And it's tragic to me that the appetite for military innovation is endless, but when it comes to taking on a project like ending world hunger, it's seen as outlandish. It's not treated with the same seriousness."
