New Kids on the Block - The Block
September 10th 2008 00:45
New Kids on the Block, pioneers of the 'boy-band' genre in the late 80s and early 90s, reformed in 2008 with all the original members - Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood, Joey McIntyre, Jordan Knight and Jonathan Knight - returning to the group after 14 years of disbandment.
The five-piece band scored a string of hits in the late 80s / early 90s with "Cover Girl", "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)" and their biggest hit of all, "Step by Step" - a platinum selling single from their 1990 album of the same name.
Due to waning popularity, the group disbanded in 1994 to pursue their own interests, start a family and even new careers. Despite several attempts to coerce the band into reforming temporarily for one-off shows, nothing materialised until an official announcement was made in April 2008 that the group was reuniting with the intention of recording a new album and planning to tour.
Five months after the group officially reformed, NKOTB's fifth and latest album, The Block, was released in September 2008 featuring collaborations with some of the hottest artists in the world including Ne-Yo, The Pussycat Dolls, Akon and Timbaland.
The album's first single, the mellow jam "Summertime" has so far peaked at no.36 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and no.90 on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart. R&B superstar Ne-Yo appears on the second single, “Single” and other collaborations include “Grown Man” (with The Pussycat Dolls and uber-producer Teddy Riley), and “Full Service” (with super-group New Edition).
