Ash Grunwald - Fish Out Of Water

September 3rd 2008 23:59
Ash Grunwald

Aussie singer Ash Grunwald first came into the limelight in 2002 when his first solo album, Introducing Ash Grunwald, was released to critical acclaim.

Two years later, Grunwald released his sophomore album, I Don't Believe, which garnered an ARIA award nomination for Best Blues and Roots Album and various other accolades including the Victorian Blues award for Male Vocalist Of The Year. The release cemented his place as one of the country's most popular Blues and Roots singer with a formidable fan base desperately looking forward to a new release while the singer tried his hand as a radio DJ with Triple J from mid 2005 to late 2006.

Well, the wait for a brand new album is finally over with the highly anticipated full length studio release, Fish Out Of Water - arguably Grunwald's most adventurous, exciting and accessible album yet - hitting the shelves in the last weekend of August 2008.

Featuring collaborations with respected beat master Countbounce from Aussie hip hop outfit, TZU, the album features an unique hybrid of musical styles, infused with thrilling beats and grooves, junkyard percussion, scorching riffs and, of course, Grunwald’s trademark deep and strong vocals.

Could this be a the album that brings blues music to a new generation of listeners? Grunswald seems to think so when speaking to The Mercury:

"I guess I am a fish out of water in what I do," he said.

"I’m probably the only person in the roots scene who loves to use technology. I love gadgets and electronic beats and different stuff, so I guess I don’t really fit into any particular scene.

"I think I’ll definitely push the technology side of it further, particularly in live gigs, because I just love gadgets. I love the idea of doing something new. It’s funny, people probably wouldn’t expect that from me because I have such bluesy influence in my sound. But I’m not a lover of maintaining old stuff. I really love the idea of combining elements of the old but always making something new with it."

Grunwald is currently touring the nation in support of his new release. To see where he's performing, check out his MySpace page.
