Pop Musicology - "The Second Drummer Drowned"

Michael Jackson converts to Islam

November 17th 2008 23:41
Michael Jackson in a veil in Bahrain
Billie Jean wasn't his lover, and he was both Bad and Dangerous, but Michael Jackson has finally converted to Islam, leaving his Western animal farm behind.

That's right - Neverland is closed, the pathers were sent home, and Michael Jackson is dressing up as a Muslim woman in Bahrain.

The news around the world, despite the worsening economic crisis, is that Michael Jackson has converted and changed his name to Mikaeel.

"Last year his brother, Jermaine Friday, suggested Jackson would convert having taken an interest in Islam since Friday's conversion in 1989.

"When I came back from Mecca I got him a lot of books and he asked me lots of things about my religion and I told him that it's peaceful and beautiful," said Friday.

"He read everything and he was proud of me that I found something that would give me inner strength and peace. "

I can understand Jackson's inner conflict... he was a world famous entertainer, a creator of music. Then, because he started acting a little strange, his country looked at him like a freak, someone to laugh at. Simultaneously, he was charged with being a pedophile, and that's how he'll always be remembered, even though he was absolved of any guilt.

Nelly - Brass Knuckles

September 18th 2008 06:45
Nelly

After several delays, Rap star Nelly has released his latest studio album, Brass Knuckles, on Sept. 13 in Australia and Sept. 16 in the US.

The bling-meister that is Nelly sticks to his tried and tested pop-rap formula that has been so successful for him since his debut solo album, Country Grammar was released in 2000 and of course, the follow-up album, Nellyville, which spawned a series of worldwide smash hits in "Hot in Herre", "Dilemma" and "Work It".

Nelly Brass Knuckles

In typical Nelly fashion, his fifth and latest album features a mix of melodic flows to hyper-speeds and the rapper's distinct drawl. It also features collaborations with a string of - 16 to be exact - big name artists such as Akon, Ciara, Fergie (from the Black Eyed Peas), Nate Dogg, Pharrell Williams, Snoop Dogg, and Usher to name just a few. A few of his famous guests end up stealing the show on several occasions, but some may point to the singer's waning popularity as the reason to why that is.

Rolling Stone magazine gives the album a respectable 3 out of 5 stars: "Combining Will Smith's friendliness with St. Louis slang and a down-home drawl, Nelly has mastered his own brand of crossover appeal."

Brass Knuckles Track Listing:

1. Chill
2. Warrior
3. Hold Up
4. L.A
5. Self Esteem
6. Party People
7. Body On Me
8. Stepped On My J'z
9. Let It Go (Lil Mama)
10. Piece Of My Heart
11. Who Fucks Wit Me
12. Bay
13. Lie
14. Problems
15. Long Night

Lady GaGa - The Fame

Lady GaGa

Stefani Germanotta aka Lady GaGa is an upcoming singer-songwriter from the US best known for her mastery of the dance-pop genre and her hit debut single "Just Dance" which has generated considerable airplay across North America, Sweden, Australia and New Zealand.

On 'The Fame', her debut album released in Australia on September 6, Lady GaGa blends dance-pop, electro-pop, rock, disco and burlesque into one unique fusion of sound.

Lady GaGa The Fame

“The Fame is about how anyone can feel famous,” she explains. “Pop culture is art. It doesn’t make you cool to hate pop culture, so I embraced it and you hear it all over The Fame. But, it’s a sharable fame. I want to invite you all to the party. I want people to feel a part of this lifestyle.”

The album's opening track is “Just Dance,” and it sets the tone for the rest of the album with its “fun, LA, celebratory vibe.” Other tracks on the album which are equally as catchy include “Boys Boys Boys,” - GaGa's female version of Motley Crue’s ‘Girls Girls Girls' with a twist -

“My goal as an artist is to funnel a pop record to a world in a very interesting way,” says GaGa, who wrote all of her lyrics, all of her melodies, and played most of the synth work on The Fame.

Fame Track Listing:

1. Just Dance
2. Lovegame
3. Paparazzi
4. Beautiful, Dirty, Rich
5. Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)

Moby Dick was a big angry whale
The AVClub has a terrific list on 29 instrumentals by bands that usual have vocals, and it's complete with fun YouTube videos to back up their claims.

While I'm happy to pass up the video by Rush, it was the clip of Led Zeppelin's "Moby Dick" that reminded me why John Bonham was such an explosive drummer

The Best-of-Craigslist is a great way to take a little cross-section of online America and have a damn good time reading it. It's fun, sometimes sad, sometimes thrilling.

This cat in Austin wrote a long-ass post about how he managed to not see the Pixies play a secret show, twice. It rose to the top of the list, perhaps because he uses such colourful language
