From NME

English indie rock band Arctic Monkeys was formed by four mates - Alex Turner, Jamie Cook, Andy Nicholson and Matt Helders - in 2002 in the city of Sheffield, England.

Soon after their formation, the band began playing at gigs in the Sheffield city centre and their popularity began to grow thanks to their legion of online fans which created a fan site for the band via MySpace.

It was three years after their formation that the band released their first single, "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor", which debuted at #1 on the UK singles chart and went onto win a prestigious NME Award in 2006.

The Arctic Monkeys have released two albums to date - the record-breaking debut Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006) and Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007). The band's debut album was a huge success and became the fastest selling debut album in the UK at the time with album sales of over 360,000 copies in its first week alone. It also won the band the Mercury Prize in 2006.

The album spawned four hit singles, "The View from the Afternoon", "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor", "Fake Tales of San Francisco" and "When the Sun Goes Down".

The band's sophomore album, Favourite Worst Nightmare, also shot straight to the top of the album charts after its release in April 2007 albeit at a slower rate than the debut effort with 220,000 copies shipped in the first week.

The album's three singles so far are "Brianstorm", "Teddy Picker" and "Fluorescent Adolescent" and they charted at #2, 20 and 5 on the UK singles chart respectively - all 12 tracks on the album have charted in the top 200.

Despite the band's apparent change in musical direction - the sophomore album is much louder and faster than the debut - both fans and critics have embraced this new style well. Favourite Worst Nightmare won the Best British Album award at the 2008 BRIT Awards.

The Arctic Monkeys are now working on new material for their upcoming third studio album.
