Music advice from Thelonious Monk

December 30th 2008 05:03
Thelonious Monk was the main man at the grandstand when it came to playing the jazz piano. There's no shortage of YouTube videos with the Thunk playing his legendary bebop style, fast and discordant on the piano.

Check it:

This image has been flying on the net recently, floating to the top of Reddit, where it's claimed to be advice on playing music, that sounds so easily attributed towards life, too:

Life and music advice from Thelonious Monk

Unfortunately, or fortunately, some knowledgeable cats on Reddit dissovled the rumour in the truth: that this image is falsely attributed to Monk but is really the work of Steve Lacy, who played with Monk in the 60s.

"I have confirmed with expert jazz historians; this is Steve Lacy's work, who played with Monk in 1960. Lacy's introduction to Thelonious Monk: His Life and Music uses the above material explicitly."

Ukelele and Washboard

Old School Ukelele Kazoo and Washboard
For this post, we're going back.

How far we going back?

Real far back.

Out to 1929, comes this rare video of two cats, one on the uke, one on kazoo and washboard, getting down like Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.

That guy on the washboard? Money. Anyone that can pick up a kazoo and a washboard and play a good jam without coming off like a eccentric loser is a big mack daddy player. You know how it is - if you dropped a little improvised washboard on the street today, people'd be throwing $5 bills at your feet.

Give those kids a room out back, give 'em some beans and pork, and tell 'em to play here three times a week. Kids from the city will love it!
