Pussycat Dolls - Doll Domination

September 24th 2008 01:15
Pussycat Dolls

US all-girl pop band, the Pussycat Dolls, have just released their hotly anticipated sophomore album, Doll Domination, in Australia on September 20.

Released in a special 2-CD deluxe edition of the album in Australia featuring five extra solo songs from each of the dolls, Doll Domination features a total of 23 tracks including the hit single "When I Grow Up" which peaked at no.9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and no.2 in Australia.

The tracks on the album have been produced and/or written by a host of familiar names including Timbaland, The Clutch, Cee-Lo Green, Lucas Secon,Wayne Hector,Cutfather, Jonas Jeberg, Sean Garrett, Darkchild, Kara DioGuardi, Fernando Garibay, Lady GaGa, Ryan Tedder, and Chase N. Cashe of Zone 4 Inc. Cameos from stars like R. Kelly, Snoop Dogg and Missy Elliott can also be found on the album.

Despite all this, Rolling Stone magazine - and other critics - have largely given the album the thumbs down and the general consensus is that it fails to live up to the hype of the group's debut effort. Receiving two-and-a-half stars, RS said "the album sounds like the Dolls just threw everything they had against the charts to see if anything would stick."

"When I Grow Up" clearly already has. But what's next?

Nelly - Brass Knuckles

September 18th 2008 06:45
Nelly

After several delays, Rap star Nelly has released his latest studio album, Brass Knuckles, on Sept. 13 in Australia and Sept. 16 in the US.

The bling-meister that is Nelly sticks to his tried and tested pop-rap formula that has been so successful for him since his debut solo album, Country Grammar was released in 2000 and of course, the follow-up album, Nellyville, which spawned a series of worldwide smash hits in "Hot in Herre", "Dilemma" and "Work It".

Nelly Brass Knuckles

In typical Nelly fashion, his fifth and latest album features a mix of melodic flows to hyper-speeds and the rapper's distinct drawl. It also features collaborations with a string of - 16 to be exact - big name artists such as Akon, Ciara, Fergie (from the Black Eyed Peas), Nate Dogg, Pharrell Williams, Snoop Dogg, and Usher to name just a few. A few of his famous guests end up stealing the show on several occasions, but some may point to the singer's waning popularity as the reason to why that is.

Rolling Stone magazine gives the album a respectable 3 out of 5 stars: "Combining Will Smith's friendliness with St. Louis slang and a down-home drawl, Nelly has mastered his own brand of crossover appeal."

Brass Knuckles Track Listing:

1. Chill
2. Warrior
3. Hold Up
4. L.A
5. Self Esteem
6. Party People
7. Body On Me
8. Stepped On My J'z
9. Let It Go (Lil Mama)
10. Piece Of My Heart
11. Who Fucks Wit Me
12. Bay
13. Lie
14. Problems
15. Long Night

Jessica Simpson - Do You Know

September 16th 2008 06:45
Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson has returned to her 'roots' for her latest album, "Do You Know", a country album inspired by the country music she was brought up listening to. Simpson's sixth overall studio album and the first since the disastrous "A Public Affair" album of 2006, Do You Know was recorded in Nashville and features collaborations with legendary country music artist Dolly Parton and songwriter Hillary Lindsey of Carrie Underwood fame.

Released in Australia on September 13, 2008 and a couple of days earlier in her homeland, the album received largely mixed reviews with most critics giving her the thumbs down in her first effort in an attempt to crossover to country music. Slant Magazine give the album just 1 and a half (out of five ) stars for Simpson's "limitations as a vocalist" and "A-list profile and C-list credentials" while the New York Post were a lot more generous, awarding the album 3 out of 4 stars because "for the first time in her career she's created an album where she consistently shows off her full-bodied voice with solid, yet simple tunes that don't overthink the music."

Jessica Simpson Do You Know

A commendable debut crossover country debut effort or stick with pop and give us another round of A Public Affair? You decide.

Do You Know? Track Listing:

1. Come On Over
2. Remember That
3. Pray Out Loud
4. You’re My Sunday
5. Sippin’ On History
6. Still Beautiful
7. Still Don’t Stop Me
8. When I Loved You Like That
9. Might As Well Be Making Love
10. Man Enough
11. Do You Know

"Handlebars" by Flobots

September 8th 2008 23:41
Flobots are a Denver-based hip hop group that have been together since 2000, producing alternative hip hop with social conscious. You might be getting a little weary of preachy hip hop, but as long as hip hop has a powerful commercial presence, there'll always be the artists that want to push back.

This year, they came to prominence with a song called "Handlebars", which would appear to be about a guy riding a bike with no handlebars

Hot Gossip Sarah Brightman I lost my heart to a starship trooper

I quite enjoyed "Starship Troopers", Paul Vehoeven's candied adaptation of the Robert Heinlein novel. The film won praise and scorn for deviating from the tone of Heinlein's book, projecting a sense of anti-war satire.
