Pop Musicology - "The Second Drummer Drowned"

Pop Musicology - August 2008

The Verve - Forth

August 27th 2008 23:26
The Verve

After a long eight-year hiatus, English rock band The Verve regrouped in mid-2007 to the delight of their worldwide fans. Having given us three superb albums - A Storm in Heaven, A Northern Soul and Urban Hymns - the first thing on the mind of music lovers was when were The Verve going to wow us once again with a brand new album, one that would be the most highly anticipated in the band's history.

Well, the wait is over -- The Verve's newest album is appropriately titled "Forth" and features 'Love Is Noise', an up-tempo track with a great hook and the unique voice of frontman Richard Ashcroft.

The Verve Forth

Their latest effort was released in the US on August 19th, and 23rd in Australia on the band's own label On Your Own, which is run by the Verve's management company Big Life. Featuring ten spanking new tracks, the immense chemistry and sense of spontaneity that the four-piece band still has despite an absence of almost a decade is clearly still evident in their music.

Forth Track Listing:

1. Sit And Wonder
2. Love Is Noise
3. Rather Be
4. Judas
5. Numbness
6. I See Houses
7. Noise Epic
8. Valium Skies
9. Columbo
10. Appalachian Springs

Sneaky Sound System - 2 (Two)

August 22nd 2008 07:20
Sneaky Sound System

Sydney-based Sneaky Sound System is a three-piece Australian pop band made up of Miss Connie (Connie Mitchell), Black Angus (Angus McDonald), and MC Double D (Daimon Downey).

The trio released their self-titled debut album in 2006 to huge success with sales surpassing twice platinum and at one point, they had four singles in the Top 40. Their single ‘I Love It’ had the longest chart run in Oz history!

Sneaky Sound System

Featuring pop-like catchy tunes, their background lies in the country’s exploding dance scene - a freshing change in a time of predictable R&B tunes and Indie bands. Their music overflows with hooky choruses and colourful character and reflects their distinct personalities and roles. Black Angus, named after a corrupt copper from Oz TV series ‘Blue Murder’, is the musical dynamo; MC Double D is the flamboyant showman with a mic; and Connie, the quirky front woman.

The pop group has now challenged themselves to emulate, and perhaps, even surpass their past success with their sophomore album - 2 (Two). The brand new studio album - released exactly two years after their first on August 16, 2008 - was mixed by Spike Stent and Paul PDub Walton of Madonna, Björk, Massive Attack and Gwen Stefani fame at Olympic Studios in London.

Moby Dick was a big angry whale
The AVClub has a terrific list on 29 instrumentals by bands that usual have vocals, and it's complete with fun YouTube videos to back up their claims.

While I'm happy to pass up the video by Rush, it was the clip of Led Zeppelin's "Moby Dick" that reminded me why John Bonham was such an explosive drummer.

Great, isn't it? Though I don't know how much attention I could have paid in a concert like that, though... Led Zep was notorious for stringing out their songs, turning "Dazed and Confused" into a 45-minute song, with Jimmy Page, high on coke and hitting his guitar with a violin bow.

And how about a reminder of why teenagers love to take drugs and listen to music? Even when I was in school, the potheads loved to listen to Pink Floyd, claiming that they could see time and understood light when listening to the album on mushrooms.

And how could I leave off The Pixies, with their terrific, angry instrumental that makes you want to shred aluminum siding with your bare hands? The AVClub couldn't find concert footage, I guess, so instead, there's this fanmade video of a girl showing us her cleavage and dancing around in a yellow dress. Don't ask me.

Old stars have to ride out their glory like a commodity... and these guys are the same. Legends like Ray Charles, Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis were all major forces in American music, changing the landscape for years to come. Hell, Ray got his own movie...

At benefit concerts, you'll get treated to all sorts of strange combinations, like these three incredible piano players turning it up a notch
