Coldplay - Viva La Vida
June 24th 2008 06:15
Following the success of their no.1 album X&Y (2005), English alternative rock band Coldplay have released their fourth album Viva La Vida this month.
Hailed by lead singer Chris Martin as a 'new direction' for the band, work began on the new album in 2006 and was produced by legendary producer Brian Eno featuring songs that are "bracingly different from Coldplay hits like 'Clocks' and 'Speed of Sound' with darker lyrics, distorted guitars and more prominent percussion, and much less use of Martin's trademark falsetto vocals.
The end result is an album that is noticeably different and rougher around the edges but yet still distinctly Coldplay at the same time. The album's second single 'Viva la Vida' became the band's first no.1 single on the US Hot 100 singles chart - the first song by a British group to reach no.1 on the chart since 'Wannabe' by the Spice Girls in 1997.
Viva La Vida also continues the band's commercial success by selling over 500,000 in its first 10 days on sale in the UK alone and is widely tipped to become one of Coldplay's best selling albums to date.
