Pop Musicology - "The Second Drummer Drowned"

Pop Musicology - May 2008

Vanessa Amorosi Somewhere in the Real World
Vanessa Amorosi - Somewhere in the Real World

Melbourne born singer Vanessa Amorosi finally released her much-awaited second studio album, Somewhere in the Real World, this week - an album six years in the making.

Despite penning songs for the album back in 2006, delay after delay meant Somewhere In The Real World had to be pushed back for release in May 2008 (from late 2007) but fans will be rewarded with an outstanding collection of songs which show off Vanessa’s maturity and musicianship.

Vanessa Amorosi

Amorosi collaborated with some of the greatest songwriting talents in the world, including Australia’s Josh Abrahams and David Franj as well as writers from the US such Pam Reswick (Tina Arena) and Dave Tyson (Alannah Myles).

She then went to Los Angeles to record with songwriters and producers Ron Aniello (Barenaked Ladies) Greg Wells (Mika, Timbaland) and Cliff Magness (Pink, Avril Lavigne). The end result is that while Amorosi's musical tastes have become a bit heavier and more soulful, that booming voice still remains.

The singer feels that in ‘Somewhere In The Real World’, she finally has an album that represents 'her'. “I think this album represents me finally. When I listen to ‘Absolutely Everybody’ and ‘Shine’ now, I sound like a baby, because I was a baby," she said. "'Somewhere In The Real World’ represents who I am now and I believe it’s still recognisable. You can’t change your soul, but I have matured and have had life experiences that brought out these songs.” [vanessaamorosi.com ; accessallareas.net.au]

Usher

US R&B singer Usher will release his long-awaited 5th studio album - Here I Stand - in May 2008, more than four years after the release of his hit Confessions album.

Since the release of Confessions, Usher has become a father for the first time and this latest album tells a story of growth and marks a new period in the singer's life and creative expression. Many of the songs in this album illustrates the tension and challenges of balancing a very public life with private decisions; of being a sex symbol and entertainer with being a faithful husband and father.

Gangstagrass album for download

May 16th 2008 06:58
Gangstagrass album cover
Found on BoingBoing, Gangstagrass, a hybrid mashup of hip hop and bluegrass music.

"Mashup artist Rench has released a free album of "gangstagrass" music -- hiphop mashed with bluegrass. The mixes are really good, in that, "Hey, who knew those two really different flavors worked so well together?" way that makes mashups so much fun to listen to."

Boingboing is a known lovin' spoonful of the mashup scene, but I have been disappointed by their picks in the past. The idea of hip hop-bluegrass seems to make so much sense, even without listening to it.

I'm downloading it right now. You'll have to wait for my expert opinion.

...but the liner notes are compelling enough!

"calling on the spirit of Gram Parsons and Otis Redding and KRS-ONE and Dolly Parton and Nina Simone and Willie Nelson and Missy Elliott and Johnny Cash, to write about what we feel and play what our hearts tell us, because to make it happen is reason enough, and to share it with the world is all the reason you need, because we tell the truth with music and the truth is beautiful."

Jean Leloup - I lost my baby

May 7th 2008 01:33
Jean Leloup is one of Quebec's most loved musicians, a wild and unusual character. Singing in French and English, he plays to packed, hysterical crowds at the Montreal venues.

One of the songs I heard most often was "I lost my baby", a Quebec classic that is played by everyone with a guitar on hot summer nights
