Pop Musicology - "The Second Drummer Drowned"

Pop Musicology - December 2007

Ike and Tina

Ike Turner Walk of Fame
Ike Turner died this month, creating a maelstorm of weird emotions and half-revoked sentiments... he was half of Ike & Tina Turner, a great musical duo, but he was the half that smacked Tina around. And we're just not down with that, Ike.

But with his death comes the nostalgia... the good ol' times. About leaving a good job in Memphis. Pumping octane in New Orleans.

What good times? Octane? What am I talking about?

Man, you know what I'm talking about:

He was a jerk, but Ike is the dude that made Soul go 'BAAAAAAAD'

Check out his flawless guitar rhythm, perfect for backing Tina's big voice...

From the Times obit:

"Few ever claimed that Turner was a nice man, but his personal failings cannot obscure the significant role he played in the development of blues, R&B and rock'n'roll. History would be unkind and unfair if it were to remember him only as “Mr Tina Turner”."

The Living End

The Living End

Australian rockabilly band from Melbourne - The Living End - launched their careers as Runaway Boys more than a decade ago. Armed with bunch of original tunes, they renamed themselves to what we know them as to this day; racking up a quintuple-platinum album, two platinum and five gold records and three ARIA awards in the process.

The Living End are Chris Cheney, Scott Owen and Andy Strachan.

The Living End

The band released their self-titled debut album in 1998 to critical acclaim. The record spawned six singles including the hit song "Prisoner of Society", the best selling Australian single of the 90s, spending a record-breaking 47 weeks on the ARIA Top 50.

Buoyed by the incredible success of their debut album, the trio's sophomore album 'Roll On' was released in 2000 and featured a more polished sound than its predecessor. The album was officially accredited 2x Platinum status in Australia.

The Living End Roll On

In late 2003, 'Modern ARTillery' was released as the band's third album and first with new drummer Andy Strachan. Spawning three hit singles and peaking at No.3 on the music charts, the album officially went platinum in 2007.

The Living End State of Emergency

The band's most recent album was State of Emergency in 2006 and has already achieved 2x Platinum status. Debuting at No.1 on the ARIA music chart (the first time the band achieved this feat since their debut album), the album spawned four singles, "What's on Your Radio", "Wake Up", "Long Live the Weekend" and "Nothing Lasts Forever".

The Living End are currently in the studio recording for their fifth album which is slated for release in mid-late 2008.

The Beatnix in concert

I never would have imagined it...

The Beatnix are an odd Beatles-imitation band from Australia that do amazing reproductions of classic Beatles performances...down to the grainy videos!

What's the big deal? There are a helluva lotta Beatles acts these days, especially with all the Beatles revival going on, notably in throwback movie, Across the Universe.

The freaky thing about this video is that The Beatnix mashed "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" with the lyrics of "Stairway to Heaven"

What?

Lookie:

Is it brilliant? It's surprisingly catchy, though Robert Plant's nonsense lyrics seem creepy and disturbing when sung like that.

It reminds me of another Australian musician who took on Stairway, Rolf Harris:
